What started as a need to get craft to distant St. Marie Island, beyond Madagascar, developed into a project to design a functional, sectional kayak which could be portaged by paddlers to distant destinations. The outcome is PaddleYak’s TravelYak Split, a sectional, sit-on, sea kayak which can be split into three nesting parts and can fit inside most cars, bakkies, busses, trains and yachts and can be carried on airlines as sport luggage. The craft will be available in standard as well as state-of-the-art materials such as carbon and Kevlar. The prototypes have been tested in places as far afield as Zanzibar, New Zealand, Australia and Tahiti. The craft will be available from January 2026 and orders are now open. A waiting list has already developed and those wishing to acquire these craft are advised to place their orders now if they wish to have one in 2026. The first Edition will be suitable for persons under 100kg and 1.85m. A next edition will be suitable for larger persons, but its dimensions will of necessity be marginally larger. The Split, Edition 1, is a fast and sea-worthy, sit-on sea kayak and will out-perform most other craft in the sectional, frame, inflatable and portable categories. It’s a professional craft intended for real kayaking adventures. Buyers can collect the craft or it can be transported, flown or shipped, or personally delivered by couriers to buyers anywhere in the world, however remote.
